UK weather polar vortex could trigger big freeze and bring seven inches of snow

Weather maps have revealed when the UK could be blanketed in up to seven inches of snow. It comes as a "stratospheric polar vortex" is set to trigger sub-zero temperatures across the nation. Although parts of the UK will see milder temperatures this week, the near future carries the warning of snow and freezing conditions. According to WX Charts, there is a possibility that similar conditions that created the 'Beast from the East' could return.

As reported by The Mirror, a polar vortex could bring back the biting cold that caused havoc across the UK back in 2018. This is a swirling mass of air and winds of up to 150mph in the Arctic high up in the stratosphere up to 30 miles above the Earth. When weakened, the polar vortex can result in icy cold Arctic winds from the north or east. This would bring snow into the British Isles.

If this happens, snow could blanket Scotland and northern parts of England in the early hours of February 4. The possibility of snow will also spread across northern England and Wales as well.

Sadly, Plymouth is set to miss out on any of the white stuff, with forecasters expecting the majority of the snow in eastern Scotland, and more than an inch hitting the north west, Midlands and maybe Wales. However, the South West could be hit by wintery blusters on the same day.

Brian Gaze from The Weather Outlook told the Express: "Computer models are suggesting that a weakening of the Stratospheric Polar Vortex (SPV) in the coming weeks could lead to an increasing chance of cold weather during February.

"It's a long way off in weather terms but the period around Valentine's Day has, in the past, often brought the UK some of its coldest and most wintry spells of weather.

"A weakening SPV leads to an increasing chance of a very cold Arctic Blast or a Beast From The East weather pattern, like the one we saw in February 2018."

Met Office 5-day forecast for the South West

Today: A cold and frosty start, with the odd spot of mist and fog around, which may be slow to clear. Then a bright day with plenty of sunshine for most, though cloudier in far eastern parts of Dorset and Wiltshire. Maximum temperature 6 °C.

Tonight: Another cold and frosty night with the risk of further mist and fog. Starting to turn cloudier across northern Devon and Somerset by morning, perhaps with a spot of rain. Minimum temperature -4 °C.

Wednesday: Cloud thickening through the morning with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Clearer skies in the evening and turning cold with the risk of frost once again. Maximum temperature 7 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday: Less cold with near-normal temperatures by Thursday and sunny spells. Perhaps some fog to start on Friday, then a pleasant, sunny day. Cloudier with patchy rain on Saturday, clearing later.
